Batting Samples Project Questionnaire
Guidelines

It is very important to the project to keep everything consistent.  Therefore, the batting will
be the only variable and will make the very best comparison.

There are now 15 participants in the project.

Each participant will be supplied (at their own expense) with 4 1/2 yards of
Rangefinder
Muslin
(white 90" wide).  Linda Cline will purchase a bolt of this fabric and cut pieces of the
appropriate length to pass out at the February Meeting.  (Cost to each participant is $14.00 -
make check payable to OLAQ.)

The participant must also use the following:
THREAD - Signature 100% Cotton White thread on top and in the bobbin.
PANTOGRAPH - Linda Taylor's Feather Meandering 14"
BATTING - see below

Prewash the fabric and machine dry it.   Iron the fabric to eliminate wrinkles.

Cut the fabric into two 2 1/4 yard pieces for the top and bottom of the quilt sandwich (90" x
81").   If you have a stitch regulated machine, set it at 10 spi.   (DO NOT prewash the
batting.)

Quilt the entire 2 1/4 yard length of the sandwich.

Now mark the quilt to designate thirty 14" squares as shown below in the diagram.  You can
mark the lines using in several different ways.  Here are some suggestions:
>  use the channel lock on your machine to run a line of basting stitches (you can use a
contrasting thread to see the lines easily and remove the stitches after cutting)
>  use a PERMANENT pen (so it won't wash out on the section you wash)

Cut the piece in half vertically on one of the center lines.  This will allow you to leave 15 of the
blocks together with a border around them so that you can wash and dry the unit as one
piece - then cut on the lines to trim off the edges to make the 15 blocks.

Do not wash the other half - simply cut on the lines to make 15 blocks.

Do not finish the raw edges of the blocks.  Each person can decide if and how they want to
finsh their own set of blocks.

NOTE  Since you are
prewashing the fabric,
it may shrink a bit so
the areas around the
blocks may be smaller
than shown in the
example.  The example
is based on the size of
the fabric before
washing.
Attach the appropriate label to each block.
(Linda Cline printed a set of labels for each participant - you will receive two 8 1/2 x 11 pieces
of fabric containing enough labels for each of your blocks showing the type of batting you
used.  One piece will be marked WASHED and the other UNWASHED.   You will need to iron
on a paper backed fusible web to each sheet, then cut them into individual labels and fuse
one to each block.
The label should be placed 1" from bottom and side of the lower
right corner on the front of each sample
.)

Also, if you have enough batting left over (do NOT buy an extra batting just for this), cut 15
six inch squares of batting and pin one to each of the unwashed blocks.   This will allow each
participant to have a sample of the batting, too.

Print and complete the
Batting Samples Project Questionnaire.  Then make 15 copies.

For each of the 15 sets, please safety pin the 3 items together - the washed sample, the
unwashed sample, the batting sample and the questionnaire.

We will exchange finished samples at the
April meeting.
